  • Mikaelyan Transferred to Civilian Hospital
    Sasun Mikaelyan, convicted for organisation of mass disorders during March 2008 events and illegal possession of weapons, was transferred today [Feb.3] to a civilian hospital for examination after continued reports about his ill health. The Penetentiary Department of the Justice Ministry was unable to specify how long Mikaelyan will stay in the hospital. Azatutiun.am


  • US Urges Armenia and Turkey to Ratify Protocols
    US Assistant Secretary of State Philip Gordon again called on Armenia and Turkey to move to ratification and implementation of the Protocols during news conference on 1 February, stating the the process should continue regardless of other issues. Azatutiun.am


  • Cease-fire Monitoring
    On February 2, the OSCE Monitoring Mission held a regular monitoring at the line of contact between the armed forces ofNagorno-Karabakh and Azerbaijan near the village Levonarkh of Martakert region of Nagornyy Karabakh. No cease-fire violation was registered. Nagorno-Karabakh Defence Ministry stated, however, that Azerbaijan violated the regime on February 1.  ArmInfo


  • First Armenian TV in Russia
    First Armenian news and entertainment channel TV Armenia.ru will operate in Russia. The channel will highlight how Armenians participate in the social, economic and political life in the CIS countries, Asia, Europe and America, as well as cultural and historical issues. The main task of the channel is timely coverage of social, cultural, political and economic issues concerning Armenians all over the world. Azg


  • Dashnaks will Ratify if Reservations Introduced to Protocols
    Dashnaktsutiun Party will vote for ratification of the Turkish-Armenian protocols only if reservations are introduced to the text, said Dashnak MP Artiusha Shahbazyan on 2 Feb. Panarmenian.net


  • U.S. Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg arriving in Yerevan
    U.S. Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg will travel to the Caucasus on February 4 and 5. He will meet in Yerevan, Armenia with President Serzh Sargsyan and Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian to discuss bilateral and regional issues. He will proceed to Tbilisi, Georgia where he will meet with President Mikheil Saakashvili and representatives of Georgia’s opposition.Deputy Secretary Steinberg will travel to Munich, Germany on February 5 to attend the Munich Security Conference. In Munich, he will meet with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu as well as other leaders attending the conference, the U.S. Department of State said.   • CoE Human Rights Commissioner Viewpoint on Minority Languages
    Azg Daily highlighted CoE Human Rights Commissioner Hammarberg's viewpoint on minority languages viewing it applicability to the situaiton of Armenian miniroty in Georgia."Local authorities, when dominated by minority representatives, should accept that the official language should be used in parallel with the minority one when necessary," quoted the newspaper.   • PACE Co-rapporteurs' Statement
    In a statement made on 2 February PACE co-rapporteurs stressed the need for implementation of the reforms proposed by the ad hoc parliamentary committee final report on March events as well as the recommendations contained in relevant PACE resolutions. The co-rapporteurs stressed especially those related to the reform of the police - including the establishment of an independent oversight and complaints body - and the long overdue reform of the electoral code. They further announced their visit to Armenia this spring to discuss establishment of a clear reform roadmap.  In addition, the co-rapporteurs also intend to raise the issue of the sentencing of Nikol Pashinian as well as other cases where they have sought clarification from the authorities.
