  • President Sargsyan has signed a decree on 2 June appointing Tigran Sargsyan head of Armenia’s new government. Sargsyan has led the Armenian government since 2008 and joined the ruling Republican Party in 2009. The PM will form the new government within 20 days. Ministerial portfolios have not been discussed yet, but no major changes are expected in the government according to Edward Sharmazanov. Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Defense, Emergency Situations, and Education are expected to be reappointed in the coming days.     The Governor of Gegharkunik province [since 2007] BHK member Nver Poghosyan has submitted his resignation to PM Tigran Sargsyan. Another BHK member, Governor of Vayots Dzor marz, Sergey Bagratyan is likely to follow suit, the press reports. A1+, Aravot

    Three Armenian soldiers were killed as a result of a subversion committed by the Azerbaijani side against a military post in the village of Chinari, Tavush region, during the night of 4 June. The MoD has not specified the number of wounded soldiers but the press has reported five injured in Chinari and one officer, a senior lieutenant, injured during a simultaneous attack at a military post located in Berdavan village of Tavush province. According to the head of Chinari village, Samvel Saghoyan, another attack against a nearby military post has been prevented.     Another death has been reported in Armenian armed forces on 1 June. Soldier Saro Samvelyan, 19, was shot dead in unknown circumstances in one of the south-eastern military units in NK. Investigation is underway. Haykakan Zhamanak, A1+, Azg daily

    The US State Secretary Hilary Clinton arrives in Armenia today to meet state officials and civil society leaders. On 5 June Clinton will visit Georgia, on 6 June Azerbaijan, and is expected to leave for Turkey after the Transcaucasian tour. Lurer.com

    In relation to Secretary Clinton’s upcoming visit to Georgia, a petition signed by over 1650 residents of the Armenian-populated Javakhk (Javakheti) region of Georgia was transferred to the U.S. Embassy in Armenia on 2 June, asking the Secretary “to raise the issue of Armenian political  figure and political prisoner Vahagn Chakhalyan’s acquittal and release” during her meetings with Georgian authorities. Chakhalyan was arrested in July 2008 and controversially sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment in 2009. The case is currently under consideration at the ECtHR. ArmInfo, Hetq.am
